Around the globe, technology jobs are at the top of almost every “fastest growing” and “most in demand” lists. Here’s a quick look at tech jobs in different parts of the world and what selected researchers are saying about them.

United States

In the US, the top resource is the Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). Part of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the OOH “provides information on what workers do… the job outlook; information on state and area data… and sources of additional information, for 324 occupational profiles, covering about 4 out of 5 jobs in the economy.”

For the general category of Computer and Information Technology Occupations, the OOH states:

“Employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 11 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. These occupations are projected to add about 531,200 new jobs. Demand for these workers will stem from greater emphasis on cloud computing, the collection and storage of big data, and information security.”

With the average for all occupations at 4 percent growth, this IT category at 11 percent is almost three times the average. The OOH breaks this top category into more specific job growth projections through 2029, including:

  • Software developers – 22 percent
  • Computer and information research scientists – 15 percent
  • Computer network architects – 5 percent
  • Network and computer systems administrators – 4 percent

The only dark cloud on this horizon, from the US perspective, are jobs as straightforward computer programmers, projected to decline by 9 percent. The reason, per the OOH, is that “computer programming can be done from anywhere in the world, so companies sometimes hire programmers in countries where wages are lower.”

India

LinkedIn published its “2020 Emerging Jobs Report India,” which they describe as its “unique data set to establish the fastest growing jobs in the Indian talent market… the large, sustained year-over-year growth of professionals being hired signals a long-term trend.” Of the top 15 emerging jobs, 11 are in the tech industry:

  • #1 Blockchain developer
  • #2 AI specialist
  • #3 JavaScript developer
  • #4 Robotic Process Automation Consultant
  • #5 Back-end developer
  • #7 Site reliability engineer
  • #9 Full stack engineer
  • #10 Robotics software engineer
  • #11 Cybersecurity specialist
  • #12 Python developer
  • #14 Front-end engineer

This tech growth is echoed by others, even in the COVID-19 environment. RGF International Recruitment (Recruit Group) a provider of recruitment solutions in 11 countries and markets across Asia, stated the following in a press release on tech skills in India:

“Despite the economic setback India is experiencing from the COVID-19 pandemic, business leaders and experts are predicting the Indian economy and recruitment landscape will bounce back in the near future. However, the demand for technology talent with niche skill sets in ecommerce, artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging industries continues to stay strong.”

Europe

International Data Corporation (IDC) is a global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology markets. In an article from March 2020, they said:

“There is a shortage of skills in IT specialist roles throughout Europe… This is partly due to digital transformation making IT more integral to every business process, but also to rapid technology development, demand for skills in areas like cloud, automation, and AI simply outpaces the supply. Organizations will need to invest in the development, sourcing, and matching of skills to remain competitive.”

Through 2023, software developer/engineer, user support specialist and systems analyst will be tops in terms of overall demand, while the fastest growing will be machine learning designer/developer, followed by data scientist and data engineer.
